Glimpses of Tiverton's Past - the Great Fire of 1731 event image

Venue: Petroc, Bolham Road

Tiverton suffered a series of disastrous fires over two centuries, but that of 1731 proved a turning point. Around 2,000 people were made homeless. Gold St and parts of Barrington, Bampton and Fore Streets were destroyed. A national appeal provided relief and an Act of Parliament was passed to control building and reduce fire risk in the town going forward. Mike Sampson tells the story!
Held at Petroc, Bolham Rd, Tiverton, Wednesday 7th Feb, 7:00 – 9:00pm. Fee for the evening: £8 inc refreshments.
(Sign up for series of 3 talks, Feb - Apr, @ £24 for priority booking & discount on visit to Devon Heritage Centre, Exeter. Enquiries to Les Boyce 01884 256819)
